La Tamborrada in Spain is a special drum festival held every year on January 20 in the city of San Sebastián. At 12 o’clock at night, in the Konstituzio Plaza in the “Alde Zaharra/Parte Vieja, the mayor raises the flag of San Sebastián. The festival last for 24 hours. Participant, clothed as cooks and soldiers, march in companies from corner to corner of the city. The festival ends at midnight, when people assemble at the Konstituzio Plaza and the city flag is all together lowered at various locations. La Tamborrada is about the tribute of historic events, cultural unity, overcoming difficulties and happiness. There are three groups of drummers: tamborreros (who play the proper drum), the cooks, and the water carriers who drum on other instruments different than proper drums. Culinary club play a big role in organizing the festival, hence their big presence among the drummers.
