One of Europe’s biggest and most fantastic fire festivals, Up Helly Aa in Scotland takes place on the last Tuesday of January annually, in Lerwick, the main port of Scotland’s Shetland Islands where up to a thousand artists in different squads and apparel march through town. This is a fire festival renowned to mark the end of the yule season (Christmas in Scotland). The wonderful event celebrates the region’s Viking heritage with customary music and a remarkable torch-lit parade. The show concludes with over 1,000 costumed guizers throwing burning lamp into a galley, a traditional Viking long ship. Afterwards, the crowds go away to private parties where the squads perform their acts.
